About Deborah Phillips
Designer, Maker & The Sewing Lady
A Foundation in Design
Deborah’s journey began at just 15 years old, when she created her first wedding dress as a school project, designed for Elizabeth Bennet in Pride and Prejudice. From that moment on, she knew she had found her path.
She went on to study at Great Yarmouth College of Art & Design, later known as Norwich School of Art & Design, where she developed her skills in both design and manufacture.
Her career progressed from student to Fashion Technician, then Lecturer in Pattern Cutting & Manufacture, before ultimately stepping into the role of Head of the Fashion Department. During this time, she led students through their final year and presented her first bridal collection of 13 designs at the Royal Norfolk Show, an experience that laid the foundation for her future in bridal couture.
Bridal, Business & Recognition
In the early 2000s, Deborah established her own bridal business while raising her two young sons as a single parent.
Her work gained recognition at a bridal event at The Savoy in London, leading to an opportunity to showcase her designs in Milan. She was featured across local radio, television, and press as a woman in business, marking a significant chapter in her creative career.
In 2007, she made the decision to step away from the business to focus on raising her children, putting her career on hold during those formative years.
Returning to Creativity
Before the pandemic, Deborah worked as a full-time Art Technician at City College Norwich and Paston College, while also teaching sewing classes to both beginners and intermediate students.
During this time, her passion for making and teaching continued to grow.
Like many, the pandemic became a turning point. Alongside her teaching work, she began creating for both others and herself, making garments, exploring sculpture and mosaic, and eventually discovering a deep connection to fluid and abstract painting.
This period marked a significant personal and creative evolution.
A Multi-Disciplinary Practice
Today, Deborah’s work spans couture bridal design, alterations, textile creation, and fine art.
Her original artwork is used to create fabrics, which are then transformed into accessories such as ties and cufflinks, bridging the worlds of art and fashion.
